An ancient bay
İstinye's name comes from the ancient "Leosthenion". In the Middle Ages it became "Sosthenion" and over time took its present form. In Byzantine times the bay was home to a church and monastery dedicated to St Michael, the "Michaelion".
The Bosphorus business neighbourhood
İstinye lies between Emirgan and Yeniköy on one of the most sheltered bays of the Bosphorus. Borsa Istanbul, the Istanbul stock exchange, has had its headquarters here since 1995. Close to the Maslak business district and shopping centres, it is a first choice for people who want to live near work.
Living and doing business in İstinye today
Apartments for rent and for sale do not stay empty for long in İstinye. Homes overlooking the bay, residential compounds and homes close to Maslak are the most requested. With the business world so close, it is also one of the first places people look for offices, shops and commercial space.

İstinye has the widest price range in Sarıyer: an older flat in the centre and a same-size flat in a new development can differ tenfold.
For sale prices, three things matter most: whether the flat sees the Bosphorus, whether it is in a compound, and the age of the building. Older flats along the shore are usually spacious, and the view and location push their price up. Newer flats are mostly further inland, in areas like Ferahevler, and the two often end up priced alike. The view matters more than the age: a 300 m², 30-year-old flat facing the Bosphorus can reach TRY 110 million, while a new 240 m² flat a little further in, with a sea view, is around TRY 90 million.
Notable compounds
- İstinye Boğaziçi Sitesi — A large, sought-after compound with terraced duplexes and parking.
- Hillpark İstinye — A new development close to the Bosphorus, in the neighbourhood's top price bracket.
